Story of Babruvahana

Babruvahana was the son of Arjuna (one of the Pandavas) and Chitrangada, the princess of Manipur.

Babruvahana’s birth story:

  • During the Pandavas’ exile, Arjuna traveled across India and reached Manipur. There he married Princess Chitrangada, the only heir to the Manipur throne, with the condition that their son would be the heir to Manipur’s throne.
  • After Babruvahana’s birth, Arjuna left Manipur to complete his exile, leaving the child to be raised by his mother Chitrangada. Babruvahana grew up to be a mighty warrior, well-versed in warfare and archery, like his father.
  • As promised, Babruvahana became the king of Manipur. His skill in warfare and administration made him a renowned ruler.
  • The most significant event in Babruvahana’s life came when Arjuna was performing the Ashwamedha Yagna. As per tradition, Arjuna followed the sacrificial horse that was allowed to roam freely across kingdoms.
  • When the horse entered Manipur, Babruvahana, unaware that Arjuna was his father, captured it as was the custom. This led to a fierce battle between father and son.
  • In the battle, Babruvahana defeated and killed Arjuna, not knowing he was fighting his own father. Upon learning the truth, he was devastated.
  • However, with the help of Ulupi (another wife of Arjuna) and her magical gem, Babruvahana was able to revive his father. This was actually a blessing in disguise, as it helped Arjuna free himself from a curse by Ganga.
  • After this incident, Arjuna embraced Babruvahana and blessed him. Babruvahana continued to rule Manipur justly and became known as one of the greatest kings of his time.
